I was recently contacted by a Swiss photographer called Dan Hostettler who is based in Prague and runs a glamour photography studio there. I have worked in Prague myself and for all sorts of reasons it’s a fantastic location for any photographer looking for models. The beer is great as well…
Dan spends quite a lot of his time running workshop courses for photographers interested in learning more about glamour photography and has recently produced an eBook in PDF format that concentrates on facial expressions and how to communicate a feeling or emotion with the viewer.
The book itself is largely a visual guide but also includes areas such as gestures and the information would be just as valid if you were photographing a clothed model. There are over 130 pages with more than 170 photos, most of which were done with a single model but later on it includes a section of images with different models from real shoots.
The main point of this guide is showing what you must do as a photographer to tease out the right facial expressions from your model and gets away from the fixed formula illustrated poses that often fail miserably with blank stares or awkward expressions. It’s all about direction, being confident, putting your model at ease and explaining clearly what you need.
